Press Release

DAYTON, OHIO – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley (BBBS) is thrilled to announce that one of our Bigs, David Borden, has been named the Ohio Big of the Year.

David and Griffin in 2004

In 2004, David Borden was new to the Dayton area and looking to get involved in the community. BBBS’s mission aligned with David’s personal belief that “There is no greater need in society than to invest in the lives of our youth, in a meaningful, sustained fashion.” In March of that year, David was matched with Griffin, then 6. Wende, Griffin’s mother, had enrolled Griffin in BBBS hoping her son would gain a positive male role model. Eleven years later, David and Griffin are still matched and as close as ever.

From attending baseball games to go-karting to hanging out to participating in BBBS’ Over the Edge event, David and Griffin have created a close, lasting bond. Wende can attest to the power of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 1-to-1 mentoring relationships and is thankful for David’s involvement in her son’s life. She is grateful Griffin has someone to turn to other than her for support, guidance and encouragement.

It’s clear to anyone that this match has been extremely important to both Big and Little. Griffin calls David “the closest thing I have to a father,” and a constant, positive presence in his life. He is quick to say he values David’s advice and that David’s opinion is extremely important to him; David helps Griffin feel confident in even his most difficult decisions.

Likewise, David is grateful for his relationship with Griffin and calls it a privilege to be involved in his life. For David, it is most gratifying to look back and see how his Little has grown over the years. He says, “I remember the way in which he has grown: his willingness to take responsibility for his actions, his ability to not accept the status quo, his learning good decision-making practices that will serve him well for the rest of his life, and his talent for continuing to seek out the most appropriate course of action, made possible through personal discipline.”

Over the years, this friendship has become something more akin to family. Griffin says, “Dave has grown to be a huge part of my life, he’s become an important member of my family, and I don’t really wish to know what my life could have been if I hadn’t had his influence.”

We would like to congratulate David on being honored as the Ohio Big of the Year, and thank him for being such a positive influence and mentor for Griffin.

About the Big of the Year Award

The Big of the Year award was established to recognize mentors in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program whose contribution of time, service and support go above and beyond in transforming the life of a child. Every year, BBBS agencies from across the country nominate a Big Brother or Big Sister and each state’s advisory board then chooses a winner. The winner will be nominated for the National Big of the Year.
